Smith has five breaks throughout the year - fall, Thanksgiving, winter, spring and summer. All houses will remain open for fall, Thanksgiving and spring break periods, unless otherwise noted. All houses will close for winter and summer break to students not approved for housing during these break periods.

It is important that you know the dates when houses close before breaks and open after breaks. You will not be permitted to stay in a house after the designated closing date and time nor to move back into a house before the designated date and time.

Available Housing

Fall Break

All houses are open for fall break. You do not need to apply to stay in housing during fall break. Meals are available for students participating in the meal plan during the fall break period.

Thanksgiving Break

All houses are open for Thanksgiving break. You do not need to apply to stay in housing during Thanksgiving break. Meals are available for students participating in the meal plan during the Thanksgiving break period.

Winter Break

All houses, including Friedman Apartments, will close for a 10-14 day period between late December and early January for students who are not eligible for winter break housing. Winter break housing is only available to Ada Comstock Scholars, graduate students, financially independent students and international students with a permanent address outside of the United States. International students can find more information on the Office of International Students and Scholars website. Winter housing may be available to students with extenuating circumstances, such as housing insecurity, with approval from the Director of Residence Life. Meals are not provided during the winter break period.

During the winter break periods, all houses (with more than one student staying for the winter break period) will remain open for students approved to stay on campus for the winter break period, unless otherwise noted. Eligible students must complete the Winter Break Housing Request Form to request approval for winter break housing. All other students must depart campus by 10 a.m. on the day after the last scheduled Smith final exam. Houses will reopen to all students returning to their fall housing assignment for the spring semester at 1 p.m. on the day prior to the start of January interterm period.

NOTE: Students who will be on campus for both the fall and spring semesters do not need to remove items from their room assignment during the winter break period.

Spring Break

All houses are open for spring break. You do not need to apply to stay in housing during spring break. Meals are available for students participating in the meal plan during spring break.

Summer Break

During the summer break period, houses close to all non-graduating students starting at 10 a.m. on the day after the last scheduled Smith final exam. Houses close to graduating students at 12 p.m. on the day after commencement. Select houses will remain open for students approved to stay on campus for summer housing. Additional information regarding summer housing can be found on the Summer Housing website.

Fees

Housing Cost

Effective Spring 2019, all fees associated with academic year break periods (fall, Thanksgiving, winter and spring) have been eliminated. There are no fees for students who remain on campus during academic year break periods. Summer break housing fees apply for students approved for housing during the summer break period (see Summer Housing).
