Smith College Policy on Substance Abuse and Substance Use

This policy reflects the College’s commitment to maintaining a healthy, safe, and productive environment that is free from the harms associated with drug and alcohol misuse. This commitment is supported through (1) education, prevention, and counseling resources, and (2) the prohibition of the unlawful manufacture, distribution, dispensing, possession, or use of controlled substances, as well as the unlawful or unsafe use of alcohol.

Controlled substances include, but are not limited to, narcotics, barbiturates, amphetamines, cocaine, cannabis, anabolic steroids, and prescription medications when used unlawfully or contrary to their intended medical purpose. For purposes of this policy, references to “substances” include both controlled substances and alcoholic beverages.

Compliance with this policy is a condition of employment and/or enrollment at the College. All members of the Smith College community are encouraged to seek assistance for substance-use concerns and are expected to understand, comply with, and support the principles and requirements outlined in this policy.
