Student Conduct and Academic Integrity

Graduate Conduct and Academic Integrity Board

Students enrolled in Graduate & Special Programs have to meet expectations of student conduct/social responsibilities and academic integrity. Thus, graduate and certificate students are bound by the Academic Integrity Statement and Code of Student Conduct. If graduate and certificate students violate these codes, they participate in the following adjudication processes:

Non-Academic Violations

  • The graduate or certificate student will go before the Graduate Conduct Board.
  • The Graduate Conduct Board consists of 5 members:
    • Associate Dean of the Faculty/Director of Graduate and Special Programs
    • Dean of Students or designee
    • Three graduate program directors

The scope of judicial authority for the Graduate Conduct Board ranges from issuance of a warning to removal of teaching fellowships to suspension or expulsion from Smith College.

  • Graduate students may appeal the decision of the Graduate Conduct Board by presenting their case to the Provost.
  • If graduate program directors are not available to serve on the Graduate Conduct Board (summer months), an administrative hearing will take place. The Director of Graduate and Special Programs and the Dean of Students or her designee preside over administrative hearings.

Academic Integrity Board Violations

  • The graduate or diploma student will go before the Academic Integrity Board.
  • The Director of Graduate and Special Programs serves as the class dean during such proceedings.
