Graduate & Special Programs Academic Advising
Each department that offers a graduate or special program will have a program director, who acts as academic adviser to all students in the program. Departments are responsible for selecting the directors and for notifying the Office of Graduate and Special Programs of their selections. In some cases, if the number of graduate students in a specific department is small, the department chair may act as a graduate adviser. If the number of graduate students in a department is large, the department may choose to name more than one director and/or adviser.
Responsibilities
The program director’s responsibilities include, but may not be limited to, the following:
- monitoring department applications and notifying the Graduate and Special Programs office via Slate of department decisions
- contacting selected applicants regarding fellowship offers to prospective teaching fellows
- monitoring student registration
- approve final course selection and any late-in-semester course changes
- confirming completion of degree requirements for each student
- working with Graduate and Special Programs on individual special requests, such as transfer credit or waivers of degree requirements
- confirming completion of state licensure requirements (education department only)
- maintaining close contact with Graduate and Special Programs office and with Director of Graduate and Special Programs to keep them up to date on special circumstances, department or degree changes, academic problems, or violations
