Medical Emergencies On Campus

If there is an immediate threat to your or someone else’s life, call Campus Safety at 413-585-5555 or go to Cooley Dickinson Hospital at 30 Locust Street, Northampton, MA 01060.

For non-emergencies, call the Schacht Center to schedule an urgent care appointment by calling 413-585-2800 (M, T, Th, F 8:30 a.m.–4:30 p.m., W noon–4:30 p.m.) located at 21 Belmont Ave, Northampton, MA 01063.

Medical Emergencies Off-Campus

Hospitals have emergency rooms that are always in operation. They have the staffing and resources to address the most complex or critical needs. This includes threats to life like heart attacks, strokes, and traumatic injuries.

Urgent care or walk-in clinics help fill an important gap when you become sick or injured, but your regular doctor is not available and you can’t wait for an appointment. If you aren’t sure where to go, call 413-585-2800 24/7 for nurse advice.

Symptoms that warrant emergency care

Symptoms that can typically be addressed at urgent care

Chest pain


Difficulty breathing or blue lips


Weakness/numbness on one side


Slurred speech


Fainting/change in mental state


Serious burns


Head or eye injury


Concussion/confusion


Broken bones and dislocated joints (bone sticking out, severe deformity, loss of circulation)


Fever with a rash


Seizures


Severe cuts that may require stitches


Poisoning or overdose


Uncontrolled bleeding


Vaginal bleeding with pregnancy

Fever without a rash


Minor cuts and burns


Ear pain


Conjunctivitis (pink eye)


Urinary tract infection without severe symptoms


Vomiting or persistent diarrhea


Mild or moderate abdominal pain (if severe or sudden, go to the ER)


Wheezing or mild shortness of breath (if severe or sudden, go to the ER)


Dehydration


Moderate flu-like symptoms

Transportation

If you have determined that you need medical attention, you can call Campus Safety (413-585-5555). They are often able to provide rides to students who need to go off-campus for emergency care.

If someone is in a life threatening situation, call Campus Safety for an ambulance.

Follow-Up

Please contact us for follow up care and for assistance with any accommodations. Please complete a Medical Release Form so that we may provide coordinated follow up care for you.
