Associate Professor Loretta Ross Receives Honorary Degree from Hunter College

Loretta Ross, associate professor of the study of women and gender, received an honorary degree in May from Hunter College, where she also served as commencement speaker. Ross, who teaches courses at Smith on white supremacy and human rights, was awarded a MacArthur Fellowship in 2022 and in 2024, was inducted into the National Women’s Hall of Fame. She is the author of Calling In: How to Start Making Change with Those You’d Rather Cancel.

Zoya Azhar ’20 Completes HumanitiesDC Journalism Program with Investigative Report

Zoya Azhar ’20 was selected to participate in HumanitiesDC’s 14-week community journalism program where she produced an investigative report about organizing by renters in the Adams Morgan neighborhood published in Washington City Paper. Azhar earned her Smith degree in English language and literature.

Conveniently on Campus

You don’t need to go far to find convenient amenities at Smith. The menu at the Campus Center Café is available to employees—you can even order ahead on Grubhub—and benefited, full-time employees have access to Smith’s athletic facilities.

Want To Take Classes?

Eligible employees and their spouses who are not degree candidates may enroll in courses, provided there is space available and the instructor gives approval. Employees are subject to the same academic rules and regulations as Smith students, including deadlines for papers and examinations, grading system, and academic honor system.

1. Apply With Human Resources through Workday
Apply to the Office of Human Resources in advance of the start of the semester following the directions in the document below.

2. Confirm Registration
The registrar's office will receive approved applications from HR and will email instructions on registering the week before classes begin. If the course involves a separate lab or discussion, registration for both sections is required.

If you wish to audit a course only see the information on the Auditors page. There is no fee for employees or spouses/dependents of employees.

You must officially drop a course by notifying the registrar's and Human Resources office by the drop deadline.

Any employee or spouse who does not complete a course for which they are registered and does not follow the official procedures for withdrawing will receive a failing grade.

If you are employed in a position of half time or more, you are eligible to receive tuition assistance for Smith courses. Additionally, tuition assistance is available to the spouses of eligible employees.

For Staff, By Staff

Staff Council, founded in 1992, provides a comprehensive communication channel between administration and staff members. Implemented to ensure staff members’ voices are heard across campus, Staff Council also organizes fun events such as cookie competitions, staff trips, and more.

Two-Stop Shopping

The Smith Computer Store, located in Stoddard Hall 202, has everything imaginable for your electronics needs—from new MacBooks and iPads to the smallest cables and adapters, we’ve got you covered. If it’s Smith-branded clothing or accessories (or just some on-campus staples!) you’re after, stop by the bookstore at 8–10 Green Street. At either location, a valid Smith ID will get students, faculty, and staff members various discounts.
