Funding

Emergency Fund Managed by the Office of Multicultural Affairs

The Office of Multicultural Affairs (OMA) manages the emergency fund. Centering on the emergency needs of students, the fund was started by Black members of the Class of 1974 in 2001 and is an endowed fund. Areas of support include medical/dental care, eyeglasses, medications, and travel for urgent family matters.

“We would help each other, taking up collections for a sister who needed it. We felt there should be a real mechanism in place…and we want to give something back.”
Member of the class of 1974

Funding requests are reviewed weekly during the academic calendar year; fall semester, January interterm, and spring semester.  For a complete list of emergency funding sources, visit the Forms page of the Smith Social Network (note that you may need to be logged in to the Smith Social Network for this link to work properly)

An emergency is an unexpected, serious, and urgent situation, or an unanticipated event, requiring prompt action. Examples include treatment for an acute medical or dental condition, medication expense, eye care/eyeglass replacement, and travel funds for an urgent family matter. The emergency fund is not a replacement for financial aid, and is intended to cover incidental and unexpected expenses of modest amounts and not routine or anticipated expenses.
