Hack the Herd! AI in Sustainability Hackathon

March 29 & 30

Would you like to develop innovative solutions to win prizes? How about making college campuses better places through technology and AI? As achieving sustainability becomes the primary goal of our generation, this year’s Hack the Herd invites teams to harness AI-driven solutions for sustainability. While this is an Amherst College focused hackathon, students from any of the Five Colleges are welcome to participate. You will get to hear from guest speaker Ivan Zou, the founder of Raccoon Eyes AI, enjoy delicious food from Formosa at the close of the Hackathon, and gain teamwork and project-building experience with peers from across the five colleges. This year teams have a chance to win over $1,000 worth of prizes and giveaways!

Starting Your Impact Career: From Uncertain to Future-Proof

If you’re an undergraduate student interested in a career in environmental and social impact, but feeling uncertain about your future, we see you. The world may feel heavy, but your job search doesn’t have to. In this online event, we’ll share valuable insights and support in finding a direction and future-proofing your career. You'll gain tools to overcome uncertainty, build your skills and connections, and find hope for the future.

Presenter: Lauren Goldberg is a Career Self-Discovery & Leadership Coach, disability advocate, and entrepreneur. She helps social impact professionals navigate career transitions through self-compassion and confidence-building. She also speaks on Toxic Professionalism and shaping fulfilling careers. Her lived experience with disabilities informs her perspective, advocacy, and approach to coaching and leadership. Additionally, Lauren is the Project Manager at the Association of Independent Colleges of Art & Design, supporting social justice in arts and design higher education. She has extensive experience in behavior change, motivation, and organizational culture work within social and environmental impact organizations. Lauren holds a B.A. in Environmental Studies with a minor in Business from Ithaca College.

Undergraduate Coursework & Internships for a Career in Conservation

Environmental Careers Outlook

Join a panel of ecologists working across sectors for their assessments of current and future career opportunities in the field. Featuring Aaron Stoler from ExxonMobil Biomedical Sciences, Leigh Greenwood from The Nature Conservancy, Israel Del Toro from Ramboll, Ann Bartuska from Resources for the Future, Gabriel Thoumi from Responsible Alpha, and Leonard Norman from the U.S. Forest Service.

Urban Ecology Beyond the City

Thursday, April 10 | 10 a.m.

Dr. Steward T.A. Pickett at the Cary Institute of Ecosystem Studies in New York will deliver a Rachel Carson Distinguished Lecture. Dr. Pickett is Distinguished Senior Scientist, Emeritus, at the Cary Institute of Ecosystem Studies in New York. He is a pioneer in many areas such as urban ecology, social-ecological systems theory, and the study of natural disturbance. His pathbreaking research has greatly influenced practices, ranging from conservation to urban design and planning. He has also made enormous contributions to the scientific community through visionary leadership including service as President of the Ecological Society of America. Dr. Pickett’s outstanding accomplishments have been recognized by many prestigious honors and awards. For example, he is a member of the National Academy of Sciences, a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and a recipient of the Eminent Ecologist Award of the Ecological Society of America & the BBVA Foundation Frontiers of Knowledge Award in Ecology and Conservation.
