Calculus & Mathematics Counselor

Shady can help with MTH 102 through MTH 212 and some upper level courses. 
Shady is a PhD candidate in Economics at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, with an interest in political economy and finance in the Global South. Shady is from Egypt and earned an undergraduate degree in Astrophysics (minor in applied mathematics) from Swarthmore College. He enjoys playing music and biking.

Data Research & Statistics Counselor

Brody can help with statistics courses, in particular with SDS 192, 210, and 220, and with the software R, Stata, and Excel. He can also help with econometrics (ECO 220 and 240), as well as with the introductory economics courses (ECO 150 and 153).

Biological Sciences

Maya is supporting BIO courses this fall, piloting the new General Biology tutor position. Maya will help students with the metacognition of learning biology as well as the content of most biology courses.

Kyra provides lab writing support for CHM 111 Lab (see Lab Writing support below).

Pranu provides lab writing support for CHM 118 Lab (see Lab Writing support below).

Sarah provides lab writing support for CHM 223 Lab (see Lab Writing support below).

Lab Report Appointment Guidelines

• Use the links below to make an appointment with the lab writing tutor at least 24 hours ahead of the anticipated need for feedback.
• Send the draft of your lab report at the time you make the appointment—at least 24 hours ahead so they have enough time to read it.
• Allow 24 hours’ notice if you need to cancel so another student may have your slot.

For CHM 111 lab writing, Kyra H. can help with questions related to pre-labs, post-labs, and lab reports.  Schedule an individual appointment through email or Google Calendar. She will also be working alongside the course content tutors on Tuesdays in Seelye Hall 202.

For CHM 1118 lab writing, Pranu N. can help with questions related to lab writing or course content. She holds hours on Tuesdays in Ford Hall 240 and you can sign up for appointments here

For CHM 223 lab writing, Sarah R. is available to help with lab writing by appointment and will be working alongside the content tutors in Seelye 106 on Mondays.

• Ames (she/they) is a junior CSC major. They have taken CSC 120, 210, 231, 250, 262, MTH 111 and MTH 153. They are currently taking CSC 370. She can help with coding (Python, Java, R, and Github), general CS and SDS questions. They love research, languages (coding and spoken), and art and are willing to either answer your questions or point you in the right direction!
• Binah (she/her) is a sophomore CS major. She has taken CSC 120, 210, 250, 231, and 252. She loves the creative side of maths and the technical side of the arts. She can help out with all kinds of questions about coding (Java, Python, and C), theoretical computation, and more!
• Maura (she/her) is a senior Computer Science and English major.  She has taken CSC 110, 120, 231, 250, and MTH 153.  She is happy to help with class content and coding (Python and Java particularly).
• Sofia J. (she/her) is a junior MTH major and a potential CS minor. She can help with both CSC 110 and CSC 120. She can also help with some Github issues, python, and java.
• Tanya (she/her) is a junior CSC and MST double major. She has taken CSC 110, 120, 210, 249, 251, and 293 and she can help with Java, Python, and R.
• Vivian is a junior Computer Science and Biology double major. She has taken all the CSC core courses (CSC 120/210/250/231) and CSC 252 & 372.  She can help with coding (Python, Java, R, etc), GitHub, theory, and any other class content.

Math & General Quantitative Support

Daytime Tutoring

Daytime tutoring is held in the Spinelli Center (Seelye Hall 207) for math and general quantitative questions is available from the data counselor, the calculus counselor, and a variety of peer tutors. You can receive help with the quantitative piece of any course, whether it’s finding the intersection of two lines for economics, understanding inverse proportions for a biology lab, using trigonometry for physics, or using logs and exponents for chemistry. We can also help with troubleshooting spreadsheets and using calculators.

Mathematics

Open Office Hours

The linked Google calendar contains the office hours and drop-in sessions of course TAs and instructors. The instructors listed are happy to help students in the courses listed even if the students are not in their section of that particular course.

Evening Tutoring

Evening tutoring is held in the Math Forum, Burton Hall, third floor. Most tutors can help with MTH 111 and MTH 112.

In addition to drop-in hours, you can get help by meeting with the calculus counselor or you can request help by sending an email to qlctutor@smith.edu, and please include your course number and professor.

• Elaine (she/her) is a junior MST major. She has taken MTH 153, 211, and 212 at Smith and has experience with MTH 111 and 112 as well. She has also taken a handful of SDS courses and is here to help with course work/content and more.
• Fida is a junior MTH and MES double major. She is most comfortable helping with homework or content from MTH 111, MTH 153, and MTH 211 as well as any questions about proof writing.
• Harlow is a sophomore MTH and EGR double major. They are happy to help with MTH 111, MTH 112, MTH 153, MTH 211, and MTH 212.  They are also happy to help with any EGR 100, EGR 110, EGR 270  questions you might have!
• Julia (she/her) is a senior double majoring in math and dance.  She has taken MTH 111, 112, 153, 211, 212, 233, 238, and 281.  She can help with class content, especially MTH 111, 153, and 211, as well as proof writing and LaTeX.
• Juliette (she/her) is a senior Engineering major and Math minor.  She has been tutoring for four semesters, and loves math!  She is happy to help with MTH 111, 112, 153, and sometimes take on 211 or 212.
• Maggie (she/her) is a senior Government and Math double major. She has taken MTH 153, 211, 212, 238, 280, 364, 370t[. amd 382.  She has also taken GOV 203 and ECO 150 and 153.  She is excited to help with any math-related questions!
