Precollege Theatre Program
The curtain rises this summer at Smith College, where young performers gather for two transformative weeks of acting, movement, and creative collaboration. The Smith Precollege Theatre Program is an immersive residential experience designed for high school students (entering grades 9–12) who are passionate about storytelling, performance, and the power of ensemble creation.
From your first warm-up to the final bow, you’ll be guided by theatre professionals, directors, and educators who bring real-world expertise and mentorship to every class. The program balances rigorous training with joyful discovery—helping students explore acting, voice, improvisation, text, and performance in an inclusive and inspiring environment.

What You’ll Do and Learn
Each day blends focused skill-building with collaborative performance practice:
- Acting Technique: Explore methods used by leading practitioners to build authentic, honest, and dynamic performances.
- Voice & Movement: Strengthen body awareness, vocal freedom, and expressive storytelling.
- Scene Study & Monologue Work: Rehearse short scenes and monologues with personalized faculty feedback.
- Final Performance: Perform a final production with your peers at Smith's Hallie Flanagan Studio Theatre before a live audience.
- Guest Workshops & Tours: Experience the magical structure and history of Smith College’s prestigious Mendenhall Centre for Performing Arts that is home to state of the art facilities and attend exciting and intensive workshops such as stage combat, which help hone stage craft.
The program culminates in a final showcase performance, where participants present a staged production before an audience of peers, faculty, and guests.
