Non-Degree Programs

Non-degree applicants, including educators who are using vouchers earned as mentor teachers through the licensure program, are invited to apply to Smith to take courses that do not lead to a degree.

Applying to Non-Degree Programs

Non-degree applicants must create an account in the Graduate Programs Application Management portal and pay the $60 application fee and submit an official transcript. To be admitted, a student must have an official transcript from their undergraduate degree on file with the application.

Deadlines

  • For fall semester courses, the application deadline is August 1.
  • For spring semester courses, the application deadline is January 1.
  • For summer program courses, the application deadline is June 1.

Note that acceptance as a non-degree applicant does not guarantee that there will be space in all Smith courses. Certain courses are not available for non-degree applicants such as studio art courses. Many courses are only offered during the day; check for availability using the Smith Course Schedule Search.

Summer Courses

Health insurance waivers and documents related to immunizations may be required for participation in these courses.

During the summer, Smith College’s Department of Education & Child Study offers two courses with content that is relevant to the Moderate Disabilities add-on license (for educators who already have Initial licensure in another field). These courses run during the week days from the end of June through the beginning of August, typically.

  • EDC 550 The Policies and Procedures of Inclusion
  • EDC 551 The Inclusive Classroom: Designing Effective Instruction

During the summer session (from the last week of June to the last week of July), Smith also offers:

  • EDC 511 Rethinking Equity and Teaching for English Language Learners
  • EDC 556 Learning in Classrooms
