Biography
Marina Kaplan was born in Argentina and has lived in many different places. Her most sustained residencies, in terms of time and affect, were Buenos Aires, New Orleans and now the Pioneer Valley.
She came to Smith College in 1987 with an interdisciplinary doctorate in Latin American studies and a bachelor's degree in English. While teaching Latin American literature and culture at Smith, at the 200 and 300 levels, Kaplan developed interests in the direction of postcolonialism and theory. Her research has focused on Argentine literature and history, and on the Zapatista resistance movement in Chiapas, Mexico.

Articles on Argentine authors such as Domingo Faustino Sarmiento and Jorge Luis Borges, on the significant reappearance of magical romance as a genre in frontier literature, and on 20th-century écriture and exile.
