Biography

Kyle Bissell has explored the art and science of coaching movement for 29 years in a wide range of settings from elementary physical education to adventure education programs for colleges such as Harvard and College of the Atlantic.  Bissell is currently a doctoral student in the integrated health sciences track at Rocky Mountain University of Health Professions in Provo, Utah.  Bissell is the head coach for USA Archery’s Regional Elite Development program (East Coast), a USA Archery coach trainer, and is the head coach and founder of Sattva Center for Archery Training. Bissell regularly contributes to national coaching conferences, workshops, and the development of coach training curricula for USA Archery.

Bissell strives to transition the field of coaching to an evidence-based practice by bridging the gap between research on skill acquisition and pedagogy used by coaches in the field.  His research interests include motor skill acquisition, performance blocks in precision sports, and the intersection of sex, gender, and sport.

Bissell has been certified to instruct numerous movement-based activities from canoeing to climbing, kayaking to snowboarding. Skiing magazine named Bissell one of the top 75 best instructors for children in the United States (1997) and a recent book, We Are Crew: A Teamwork Approach to School Culture (2020), highlights Bissell’s training session designs as case-studies for best practices.
