Biography

Before coming to Smith, Jeffrey Barton was Professor of Mathematics for three years at Hampshire College. He is Professor Emeritus from Birmingham-Southern College, and he has been a Structural Democracy Fellow at the Data and Democracy Lab at Cornell University’s Brooks School of Public Policy.

Barton’s research lies at the intersection of mathematics, political science, and law where he studies metrics for assessing fairness in redistricting in the contexts of partisan and racial gerrymandering. His work has appeared in Mathematical Social Sciences, Electoral Studies, and the Journal of Empirical Legal Studies.
