Atsuko Takahashi

Biography
Atsuko Takahashi, originally from Shizuoka, Japan, has two decades of teaching experience in the U.S. and Japan. Awarded a grant from the Association of Asian Studies in 2010, she spearheaded a Japanese learners' book section at the Neilson Library. Her teaching approach emphasizes direct methods, communicative techniques, and student-centered classroom interaction, fostering linguistic competence, critical thinking, and intercultural sensitivity.
A strong proponent of Tadoku (Extensive Reading) in the U.S., she collaborates with NPO Tadoku in Tokyo, producing Tadoku books and leading projects like "Tadoku Books by and for Japanese Learners" and the "Tadoku Tree House" OER website promoting inclusive and sustainable language teaching and learning.
Currently, her research focuses on enhancing metacognitive learning through sustained Tadoku practice and the impact of student-centered books on DEI education.
Outside academia, she loves dancing, baking, and drawing, and is keen on student interaction and collaboration.
