John M. Greene Award

Ann E. Shanahan ’59

Both within and beyond Smith’s gates, you are the wise and eloquent voice of the college. You have fostered an enormous sense of teamwork in the Office of College Relations, widely regarded as one of the best places on campus to work. Your staff is devoted to you.

When "hot" issues arise, you bring a thoughtful and insightful viewpoint to the discussion. As an alumna, you understand how alumnae may perceive and react to issues. You are typically proactive rather than reactive. Calm and unflappable, you are able to put any issue in perspective.

Throughout your work, you have never forgotten the students. You have enjoyed welcoming admitted students, and have quietly mentored and supported numerous students over the years. You have been a champion of diversity in the student body.

One of the primary reasons that Smith enjoys a positive relationship with the City of Northampton is that you have been our ambassador. Through service on numerous local boards, from the Northampton Center for the Arts to the Northampton Historical Society, you are well known and trusted. That trust carries over into your work with the community on behalf of Smith.

You have supervised every major event on campus, from commencements to inaugurations. You have accomplished all this with modesty and grace under pressure.

It is with deep gratitude that the Board of Trustees presents to you the John M. Greene Award for distinguished service to Smith College.
