For centuries, monuments have
telegraphed the values of dominant culture in public space and on massive scale, signaling who belongs and who does not, and eliding histories that complicate the stories they tell. Yet in the last 50 years in the United States, the role of monuments has changed significantly. In this talk, Cat Dawson describes some of the political and aesthetic strategies that characterize this
new generation of monuments, and explores the possibilities and limits of such forms in our current political moment.
For this event, Cat Dawson, Researcher, Smith College & the Institute for Cultural Inquiry Berlin, will be in conversation with Andrea Moore, Associate Professor of Music. Co-sponsored by Smith Office for the Arts, the Departments of Art and the Study of Women, Gender & Sexuality.
