Master of Fine Arts in Playwriting

This program, offered by the Department of Theatre, provides specialized training to candidates who have given evidence of professional promise in playwriting. The Department places great emphasis on collaborative work among designers, performers, directors and writers, thus offering unique opportunities for playwrights to have their work nurtured and supported by others at various levels.

Applications are no longer being accepted. The M.F.A. in Playwriting program will sunset in 2027.

*This fee may be waived if you are a U.S. citizen with comparable health insurance that will cover you while in Massachusetts. Smith health insurance is required for all international students. Health insurance does not cover all possible medical expenses such as vaccinations, lab testing, or copays and deductible costs. Dental and eye care expenses are covered in very limited capacities. These may increase your personal costs. Health insurance cost is estimated. Final cost for the 2026–27 academic year will be set in May.

Financial Assistance

The college may offer tuition scholarships for graduate study. Amounts may vary according to circumstances and funds available. Applicants for scholarships must meet the January 15 deadline for submitting all materials for the admission application.
